Urinary Tract Infection Q & A

What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)?

A UTI is an infection that affects your urinary system, which includes your bladder, urethra, ureter, and kidneys. Women are at greater risk of developing UTIs because they have a shorter urethra than men, making it easier for bacteria to reach the organs that make up the urinary system.

With early diagnosis and treatment, UTIs clear up quickly. However, if left untreated, your UTI may lead to other health complications such as kidney damage or recurrent UTIs.

What are the symptoms of a UTI?

UTIs don’t always cause symptoms. However, if you have a UTI, you may experience:

  • Strong, persistent urge to urinate
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Passing frequent, small amounts of urine
  • Cloudy urine
  • Red, pink, or cola-colored urine
  • Strong urine smell
  • Pelvic pain

UTIs can be overlooked or mistaken for other health conditions, especially in older women. If you suspect you or a loved one has a UTI, contact Apple Hill Gynecology to schedule an evaluation. When possible, the team offers same-day appointments for UTIs.

How is a urinary tract infection diagnosed?

The team at Apple Hill Gynecology can diagnose a UTI from a urine sample. In addition to testing your urine, the team also reviews your symptoms, medical and gynecological history, and conducts a physical exam. If needed, the team may also perform a pelvic exam and run other tests, such as blood work or an ultrasound.

How is a UTI treated?

In most cases, your provider at Apple Hill Gynecology can treat your UTI with an antibiotic. To clear up the infection and prevent a recurrence, they provide very specific instructions on how and when to take your antibiotic. Your provider may schedule a follow-up appointment soon after you start taking your antibiotic to reassess symptoms and make sure the medication is working.

To ease discomfort, the team at Apple Hill Gynecology recommends you:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid beverages that irritate the bladder (coffee, cola, alcohol)
  • Use a heating pad on your abdomen

For recurrent UTIs, the team may recommend you take a low-dose antibiotic for up to six months.

To get relief from your UTI, contact Apple Hill Gynecology by phone or through the online tool today. Every effort is made to make same-day appointments available.
